Frequently asked questions

What is Engra?
Engra is a private, Apple-native second brain. You capture notes, documents, web snippets, and images; everything is organized and made searchable, and you can ask questions in plain language across all of it — with answers that cite the notes they came from.
Which devices does it work on?
Engra runs on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. It requires iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS 26, which provide the on-device intelligence the app relies on.
How do I capture things?
Create notes directly, import PDFs and text files, save web pages and text from other apps using the Share sheet, and add screenshots or photos — text inside images is recognized on-device so it becomes searchable too.
Where is my data stored, and how does sync work?
Your content is stored on your device and synced through your own private iCloud (CloudKit). There is no Engra account and no Engraserver — your data moves only between your devices via Apple’s infrastructure. See the Privacy Policy for details.
Does Engra work offline?
Yes. Capturing, editing, searching, and the AI features all work without a connection. iCloud sync resumes automatically once you’re back online.
How does “Ask” work — and does it really cite sources?
Ask runs on Apple’s on-device Foundation Models. It retrieves the most relevant passages from your own notes and uses them to answer, with links to each source so you can verify and dive deeper. Nothing is sent to an external server to generate answers.
What makes search “meaning-aware”?
Search understands intent, not just keywords, using a locally built index. You can find the idea you remember even if you don’t recall the exact words — and still filter by tag, type, collection, or date.
How do I delete my data?
In Settings you can delete all local data on a device (your iCloud copy is untouched), or permanently delete everything from your private iCloud database with a confirmation step. You can also turn AI features off and rebuild the local search index at any time.
Sync isn’t working — what should I check?
Make sure you’re signed in to iCloud and that iCloud Drive is on, confirm you have a network connection and available iCloud storage, and give large libraries a moment to finish syncing. If problems persist, rebuilding the local index from Settings often helps — and you can always email us.
